Life Ceremonies

Weddings

At Northlea United, weddings celebrate, acknowledge and affirm the
relationship of love and commitment between two people. All couples
looking to be married, whether affiliated into Northlea or not, whether
seeking to be married inside the church or not, are welcome and are
invited to be in touch with the Minister to talk about their hopes,
preferences and plans.

Funerals and Memorial Services

Funerals and Memorial Services through Northlea are guided by the understanding that each is a celebration of life. The loss of someone we love is always painful, and often the circumstances of death are inexplicably tragic and hurtful. And yet, as a Christian community,, there are things we always can confirm: it is never death, but life that has the final word; that God takes over when we can do no more; that God knows our pain, and understands, and weeps with us when we weep; that every person gives a legacy to life; that every life is loved and valued, and never can be deemed outside God’s love; that death is but the limit of our sight and that life, uniquely found in spirit and in soul, continues after death, because God loves us. Baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism is the traditional means by which we begin the Christian journey. Baptism has come to have different meanings for those who receive the sacrament and it is usually wise to explore one’s hopes and intentions with a minister. To learn more and explore baptism for yourself or your child(ren), contact our church office and our minister will be happy to discuss it more with you.

Confirmation

The confirmation experience developed after infant baptism became more prevalent. There needed to be a way for children to confirm their commitment to the Christian spiritual journey at an age when they had become more independent thinkers. Confirmation allows those who were baptized as infants or small children to explore their faith and learn more about what it means to follow the Christian path. Typically, confirmation occurs in the early teen years, but for those who didn’t experience it then, confirmation can also occur in adulthood. Programs differ depending on the age and stage of life of the confirmand. It often makes more sense to start with the questions that one has about faith, theology, and spirituality and work from there. If you are interested in confirmation for yourself or your teen/young adult, please contact our church office. The minister will be happy to discuss a confirmation program/plan with you.

Reaffirmation of Faith/Spiritual Direction

The journey of life is a spiritual journey and we may or may not continue on the same spiritual path. More often, we fall away from a traditional spiritual path and find ourselves searching in many places for spiritual nurture, comfort or inspiration. While they are not sacramental, reaffirmations of faith and engagement with spiritual direction are becoming more common. Maybe you are searching and unsure as to how you feel about your Christian identity or maybe you simply have questions that you need to explore. Perhaps you want to reaffirm your spiritual path and want to reclaim or renew your spiritual practices. Wherever you are with your questions and longings, it is helpful to have a safe place to ponder and explore. If this is where you find yourself at this stage of your journey, reach out and let us know. Our minister will be happy to discuss your needs and help you discover or reclaim your spiritual path.
